This is a great article on Jean "Moebius" Giraud. I have many things and people that inspire me to create but none come close to the inspiration this man has provided me with since I was a young teen discovering Heavy Metal Magazine for the first time. It'd be a few years after that initial discovery, when my mind was entrenched in sex, drugs and rock n' roll but, when I came back to the world of comics Moebius was there to welcome me back. I hope the trip never ends.

Here's a little ditty I drew a few months ago. I've been in this sort of in-between state, exploring lots of different ideas. This one was going to be the first page of a longer tale but it ended up just being a one page gag. Turned out pretty good, I think.

Obviously I had some of da Bode on my brain.

(edit: I hadn't read this since I drew it. Got a couple of typos in there. I'll speak with my #97s about fixing it later.)

(P.S.: "Phase two negotiations" refers to a scene that was to come after this one. Basically, they kill the proprietor of the filling station. Cue rimshot.)

Here's something from the vault. An old character of mine. I think this one resides in the very dark part of my mind. He made his first appearance on the old ModernTales site back in like...2001 or 2002. I can't even remember. It was a story called, "One Good Turn." Good luck finding that out there in the internet world. I no longer have the files for that one so it's probably lost somewhere in cyber space and time. I'm sure that's for the best. Maybe I'll put him back out there someday.

I'm off to Orlando in a few days for some Ka-Blam work and Megacon. C'mon you cosplay ladies...make it worth my while! Should be fun. :)

Going's On

Hey Wizards,

I've been pretty busy lately working on some projects and spreading the Indy comic love through Ka-Blam. It also seems that my busy schedule has no let up in sight which is a good thing.

So here's what's going on.

Besides my gig with Ka-Blam, I'm working on three comic projects at the moment. One is in the beginning stages and is a sci-fi/espionage epic written by Thomas Hall, the creator of the critically acclaimed Indy series' Robot 13 and King from Blacklist Studios. This should surprise anyone who's followed my work as Thomas has given me a unique and different path to explore with my art. I'm pretty excited by all of it.

The second project is one that has been in the works for a few years. It's a story written by my longtime friend and Ka-Blam cohort, Jenni Gregory of Dreamwalker, Abbie's Menagerie fame called "Becky's Alien". It's something of a sci/fi story but very character driven. Jenni's way with character development is one of her strongest assets as a writer. Just check out her work on Dreamwalker. We're hoping to premiere this one at Megacon 2011 in Orlando next month.

The third project is one that has been more of a personal project; something I do when I need to relax or have a few spare minutes in the day. It's all the cool stuff I love to doodle and write about. Expect a plethora of aliens, ugly humans, boobs, flying cars, political/religious mysteries, lots of trash and dirty sidewalks. I'm not sure where I'm going with this one. I may just release it as a graphic novel whenever I get to the finish line. I hadn't realized how many pages I had done for this until recently so I figured I could probably mention it as I'm sure I'll see it through to the end now. Page on the right there is a random page from this project. Still needs color.

If your a fan of Moebius then you'll find this fascinating. If you have no idea who the man is, then this would be the place to get a look at his magic. The blog is called "Quenched Consciousness." It also contains some mature themes. Not safe for work.

I'm Alive..and does anyone care?!

Hey there, Wizards and wenches. Apologies for not posting much these days. I'm busy, busy and very busy, on all sorts of things. My duties with Ka-Blam are keeping me very busy. I just wrapped up another freelance gig and have begun working on a comic project with a very cool writer which I hope to start talking about early next year. With all that going on, I've managed to break some child-labor laws to put together my first art book called, DEBRIS. The title is more appropriate than you know. In a way it will close a long chapter of my life and open another. It'll be around 124 pages and available sometime in January. I'll have more news when I know for sure.

I want to wish a Happy Holidays to my fellow wizards and anyone who wanders past our tower of pain.

Hello ladies and gentlemen. Contrary to what you read in the paper I was not captured by mutant voodoo princesses, cooked in a stew of rosemary and thyme, and subsequently eaten by a grue. Instead, I've been holed up drawing comics and being completely antisocial.

I somehow managed to draw 74 comic strips in the past 4 months. By far my most productive phase. Trouble is most of 'em are dirty as hell so I can't share much here.

But I've turned over a new leaf. I'm wiping the slate. Cleansing the pallet. I can change, really I can! I'm working on a new project now and I'll start sharing some of it once I get the details hammered out.

Howdy doody, all! A few more Dungeon Minds strips for your entertainment.

The comic is going along nicely. I've been so focused on just doing it I've spent little time promoting it. If you visit the site you'll note that I've only posted through strip #10, yet I'm currently working on #33. I'm pretty far ahead of the curve, which is very cool. I'm basically testing myself here, trying to determine what the most reasonable update schedule is going to be. I'd love to do 3 per week, and so far I'm actually keeping up with that very well. But in the long run 2 might be more realistic.

Anyhows, if you like FRPG-themed humor comics with a buttload of T-n-A then this is for you.

Dungeon Minds #17

The Dungeon Minds website is now live, though I'm still tweaking it. The image in the left sidebar is a placeholder until I get a gallery set up. I was planning to use ComicGallery because it's a cool script and easy to use. But I'm undecided.

I'm posting a strip a day for a week, then I'll slow it down and probably have a random schedule. I don't do "regular" very well, and this is for fun so fuck it.

I'm going to get the menubar fixed up with some buttons using the same font as the tagline "a comic for gentlegeeks". That font, Futura, is the closest thing I can find to the font used in the 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons manuals. Hypergeeks might pick up on that.

Hey all!

No, I haven't been abducted by Alabama rebels and tortured in a shack. But I have been working on a new strip called Dungeon Minds. Some of these strips are rated R. Since I don't want to offend the gentle sensibilities of Wizards of Ur readers I'll only post the ones that could be called PG-13ish.

The premise of the series is pretty simple. It's FRPG humor with lots of T'n'A. Hey, a man can't help what he likes. And I'm having a great time with this stuff.

I don't know exactly what I'll do with it yet. Obviously I'll start posting them on my own site, but I'm not sure if that will be on www.bloodredcomics.com or a new site. I'm kind of waiting to see if this is sustainable. If its just a big batch of gags then that's cool, I'll post them up and move on. But if I continue to do these I think they deserve their own venue.

Hey all. This is just an update on my whereabouts. Yes, I'm pretending someone out there cares so, don't pee in my Cheerios!

The gaming thing has slowed down for a bit but, I am not stagnant. I've taken a job with Ka-Blam Digital Printing. I've known the Gregory's for a very long time and I couldn't be happier to contribute to their P.O.D. Empire. Fun stuff. Doesn't really feel like a job at all.

Since the gaming stuff has slowed down a bit I've been using the free time to make some comics. The latest is a dark, gothic, horror adventure, which most folks probably don't know, is a genre I've been wanting to play in for a long time. I'm a huge horror fan, (mostly the older stuff) and once you throw in the devil, religion, demons and other nastiness; I'm sold. The first issue is nearly completed but, I have to go in and do some re-writing as the characters have decided to make their own changes. The picture attached here, is a few random images from the first issue. I didn't want to spoil anything by posting pages.

I can't tell you how many times I kept forgetting to draw the bandage on Barry's arm in these last 2 episodes. (It appeared 3 episodes ago when he was getting his butt handed to him by Nessa). I must have gone back into photoshop and painted it in in about 3 different instances. Damn you, continuity.

This is also Jason Embury's last strip on coloring duty. Next week it's a 100% Piekos production once again.

In 2 weeks, Barry and Nessa come face to face again after almost twenty years...

I had a piece of scrap paper sitting on my desk for almost a year. It had one word: "Monster-baiting". What's the first thing you learn when you train to be a warrior? How to bait monsters, of course! Hilarity ensues. I've been waiting to somehow work in that joke until recently. The flashback training sequence provided the perfect outlet for some lowbrow humor.

Elf of Moonshine House

Hello all!

This is an elf chick of Moonshine House. In this setting there are Five Great Houses: Moonshine, Sunblazer, Skulldome, Petalcrown, and Wolfhollow. Each House has a style and culture all its own. I think Moonshine house is kind of the alt/goth crowd of the elfish world. They do a lot of magic stuff and love the night and all that jazz.

Right now this project is very much in the infancy stage. I have several story concepts and a few scripts but I haven’t settled on what it’s really about just yet. The only elements that are 100% definite are elf chicks and bosoms.

Yes, I am that kind of geek.

Your first look at how grand the city of Spider's Web used to be back when Barry was a teenager. I had fun drawing that first panel.

This episode is a set up for a two part joke that I think will become one of the most noteworthy in ATLAND history. I thought of it last year and I kept a note taped to my desk all that time until I finally had an opportunity to use it. You'll see next week!

Good morning and today we find out what's behind door #1.

For those that have followed the web comic in the past, I am at the stage where I usually stopped and restarted. I am happy to say I am beyond that. I have 210 pages into the story and it's only getting stronger.

Also on a side note ISSUE 1 has almost completely sold out. Which is awesome. I am pleased to see that it is at least being looked at. Now if I can do the same to 2,3,4,5 I will be even more excited.

Also Issue 6 is in full production. I will not have it for SDCC since it's release date is sometime in aug.

Atland #281 - But Daaaad!

This episode kicks off a 5-page flashback featuring young Barry. (I would do a whole series of one-shots of young Barry if I could. I love writing for the annoying little brat.)

For this flashback sequence, we have the illustrious, Jason Embury handling the coloring chores! I love working with Jason, and I thought it would help differentiate between "real time" and "flashback".

Factoids about #281:

- This episode was the FIRST page I finished for Season 2. The artwork has to be almost a year old. Maybe more. You can kind of tell, I think. Doesn't have the amount of detail I would decide to include later on. This episode was supposed to kick off season 2, but I changed my mind about where the flashback should appear.

- You'll notice the reappearance of one of our favorite lizard mounts, a Blockhead. Love drawing those lovable, drooling juggernauts.

- This is the first time we see the city of Spider's Web in all its glory. In "modern Atland", Spider's Web is empty and decrepit. http://www.realmofatland.com/?p=194 I knew at the time we were going to see it in this sequence, so it was fun "putting it back together". Spider's Web was a much bigger city than what we saw. But the desert has reclaimed most of it. How the city ended up in ruins is a tale for another day.

In TWO weeks, Barry gets his first good ass kicking at the hands of a teenage girl.

Page 122 update.

Well it is time to head back underground:) I am jazzed to see the story finally breaking free from where i would usually stop.

Issue 6 progress is on a roll - I am about halfway through it, I have added a few things to help clarify some parts in the books as well.

Issue 7 script is almost completed as well. I added a few new parts as well that helped define a few characters a little better.

Maybe soon I will start issue 8:)

Obviously, this is a set up for a flashback... Not much to talk about except that I redrew Kitty about 6 times on this page. Three or four on the original art and two or three in Photoshop.

Next week, we begin our flashback sequence featuring young Barry, Verner VonStadt, and his ferocious daughter, Nessa, in the town of Spider's Web. Your first-ever look at Barry's novice lessons in swordplay!
