The Lizard Folk

I've been spending a lot of my down time fleshing-out my fantasy world of `Tween. This also tells me that a return to this comic may be inevitable. (We'll see.) I tend not to do a lot of world-building when it comes to my comics; I just sort of let it build itself but, inevitably, I end up regretting not putting the time in. So far, I'm having fun with this. You can find the few sketches I've been doing up in my Deviant Art gallery. Here's one of the Lizard Folk. In case it comes up in your next Trivial Pursuit game...the Narrator, in the original `Tween comic, was a member of this species.

The Lizard Folk:
"Back in the day when magic had yet to dominate the world of `Tween; there existed a race of intelligent lizards. They dominated the world until an unknown, cataclysmic event occurred rendering the species almost extinct. The few who survived had lost their intelligence and have since become domesticated; used as a method of transportation by some."

  1. Beautiful sketch work, Tony. Easily in the realm of giants like Ploog. I particularly loved the wizard in the cart being pulled by a pig. That was an incredibly well rendered, evocative sketch. I'd hang that bastard on my wall.

It would be great to see a "World of 'Tween" book someday.

  4. I did, but I got over it and the negative voices started yammering away again!

I love the idea of the expanded Tween universe. I love fantasy maps and things, that sort of world-building aspect always fascinates me. I've done bits of it over the years for Pewfell's world. I've had people ask to use the maps I've done for various purposes, usually D&D games but occasionally something else (like this research project: http://www.csd.abdn.ac.uk/research/atlas/). Once I had this crazy Swedish guy who lived in Germany call me up to ask me permission to build a life-sized version of Pewfell's house in Eastern Europe somewhere. I told him OK, but I never heard from him again. He seemed very earnest at the time though, and kept telling me how wealthy he was and assuring me of his serious intention to actually do it :)

  5. I really enjoy the whole "universe building" thing myself but, I tend to keep it all to myself, buried deep in my noggin'. It's actually one of the things I enjoyed about Pewfell when I first discovered it, way back when. I wasn't sure if anyone would be interested in any of this but, so far I've been pleasantly surprised.

  6. I love world building but usually keep in to myself or just talk to James about it. I have notes all over the place about aspects my worlds (one techofuturistic, the other the world of Xrox), but very little actually worked out. Partially this is because I only started drawing a few years ago. Partially this is because I feel that spending much time drawing anything other than the current comic is a misappropriation of my energy. Even though I realize that the best stories have fully realized worlds and that someone, or some ones, spent a great deal of time designing all the elements of that world. I see this clearly when watching the special features on my favorite movies; The Lord of the Rings, Dark Crystal, Blade Runner.
I'm trying to relax more and let myself enjoy this world building aspect of the work.

  7. I mean this as a compliment. Your lizard man reminds of Brian Froud's work.
