Atland #275 - Clarke

When I decided to kill Bruce, and leave Lily off to replenish her order of priestesses back in Season 1, I had to start thinking long and hard about team replacements. I came up with Nessa almost instantly. But filling the other spot proved harder. I must have thrown away a half dozen ideas. There was a talking bear barbarian, a slimy serpent thing with one giant eyeball...Then I drew a wooden helmet and then a wooden face in the helmet...and eventually it turned into Clarke. (Who's named for my pal, Shane Clarke).

Next week, Clarke's origin!

And I am officially announcing the ATLAND schedule change. ATLAND will now run the first 3 Thursdays of every month. The last week of the month will be off.

Had a great, restful week in Arizona.

And I can finally cross of "Eat some Head Cheese" on my life's To-Do List. (Actually not too bad. Salty. porky. Just a hint of tongue, eyeballs and snout.)

Trying a different approach here. I had a bunch of the black and white strips stockpiled so I decided to colorize one and see how it looked. Turns out I really dig it. Let's run with this and see, shall we?

Gadget

Hey kids. I've been so busy I hardly have any time to do any personal art. So here's a rare piece I managed to slip in between the cracks. I see a lot of influence from the "real Life" job slipping into this piece but, that's kind of cool. I hope you dig it.

I don't feel so bad about my absenteeism because all my fellow Wizards are doing such a bang-up job of keeping this blog alive. I'm loving it!

Play Nice.

The Bean 108-
Nothing like transition:) kind of a quiet update but very needed to keep the story moving along.

As for Issue 5- (tony your stuff leaves tomorrow) Issue 5 is almost all drawn - I should have it finished by May 1 and the cover a few days later. 40 pages in almost 4 weeks i cannot believe it.

Anyways I am having a blast illustrating all new stuff- Enjoy

Elfbone: Skulldome

I've been noodling around with my Elfbone idea again. More doodles, more notes, more options. Still not sure what this is going to be, exactly. But it is building to critical mass.

Atland #274 - Too Many Steps for an Ox

Those of you who followed my preview art updates during the hiatus can identify the wooden man in the last panel. Those of you who didn't -- you're just going to have to wait and find out!

In other news - THERE WILL BE NO ATLAND NEXT WEEK -- I'm going on a much needed vacation.

In yet other news, I'm considering changing ATLAND's update schedule to 3 updates per month instead of four. The new level of detail and coloring I'm using for Season 2 (Not to mention my insane schedule, and personal sanity) are slowing down the creation process. Would you rather have 4 inferior strips per month, or 3 good ones?

Atland #273 - Just Doing My Job

A little history lesson: It was common back in the day, (that's back before electricity and sanitation, kids...) that during a bout of plague, the city would paint a big red X on the door of any infected dwelling. I thought it would be freakin' hilarious if the towns in ATLAND used a smiley face instead. Sort of a happy, politically correct way of saying, "Certain death in here...have a nice day!"

Maybe it's only funny to me...took a chance.

And, by the way, "Chuckles the Ox" is my new favorite character in ATLAND. ::FNORK!::

Next week, into the bowels of the under-cemetery!

If anyone is going to be at Boston Comic Con this weekend, I SHOULD be there on Sunday. I'll be the dude walking around with the Blambot t-shirt. Stop me and say "hi!"

Wondercon update

Wondercon Update Friday April 2

Well sitting in the exhibitor lounge and waiting for the show to open on day 2. It’s a quiet moment which allows me to give and update on day 1 of the show.

Friday is really on a half day. It’s a looking day and yet we still were really busy. Actually finally got a counter for the sketches which should be interesting. Current FREE sketch count is 142. Plus I was able to put out 4 new custom inks. The custom inks are moving as well and I will mark which inks sold prob on tuesday of next week.

Highlights and rumors and facts!

First off: We heard and confirmed STAN LEE is going to the Phoenix Comic Con in May! That is so cool. That show is getting better and better.

2nd: We are right next to Steam Crow and have a corner booth this year which keeps us really busy.

3rd: ISSUE 4 debuted yesterday and has been received really well. Very excited about the response we are getting over the comics these days. It’s been a good show.

4th: We had a really late night last night, not because we were out partying but because Jim’s flight got delayed and we had to wait at SFO for a few hours for him to get in. I was able to knock out several great games of phone risk before he arrived, hence my phone being a little dead this morning. Don’t worry babe I’m recharging it.

Forgot the camera so we snap a few phone pics. Hopefully I will be able to walk around a bit and see some of the great stuff that is out there. Even though I am being pressured to finishing the phoenix print.

Well off to a small nap – more events to come as well as the sketch count for tomorrow. The show doors open at 10 so if you are in San Fran and have nothing to do. Just come on over and say hi at booth 514 and get your free sketch and maybe pic up a comic or two.

FREE SKETCH COUNT:142

See at the show-

Color...thy beauty is the shiz.

Yeah yeah yeah. I tried black and white for a while. And I like it very much. It gives me a depth that I wasn’t getting with color. But at the same time it stripped away a lot of valuable depth in other areas. I like using color to designate certain things…like goblin blood. You need a good yellow-green for goblin blood. And I like color coding spells.

So let’s face it. It was a heartfelt effort with some good results, but in the end this comic works best in color. It is a bold, colorful kind of comic book. It is inspired by colorful comics of yesteryear. When I imagine future issues, I see them in color.

So color it is.

I should begin to re-post the color versions of the black and white pages at zyndweomer.com this weekend, if all goes well. Household is sick at the moment. Strep throat, dammit.

Color, my lover, I am coming back to your bed. Brown chicken, brown cow.
