Atland #231 - You Are Not Alone

The Nameless One speaks! (cue dramatic music...)

Last week I discussed Lily's wardrobe for this final act...as you can see, it would have been pretty hard to cover up her naughtiest bits with any other method.

I'm not 100% happy with panel 1. Something's off to me. Lily's boobs look like implants (but I guess they always do, don't they...) I usually try to give them a more natural (repose?) on her chest. Maybe it's the angle.

I do have to say it's nice not to have to draw snow for a few episodes...

Not much else to say, other than it sets up next week's episode, when Sissyl gets cocky and the Nameless One gets angry. :)

F@(K YOU, CULT GUY!!!

This child-sacrifice shit can NOT abide.

Sci-Fi Funk!

This is just a late night doodle session for the sake of doodling. Maybe there's a germ of an idea there but, I wouldn't count on it. I'm just happy to have filled-up the dreaded, white space of death. Oh lord how I hate, "Da' Funk!"
The funny thing about "da' funk" is that I could possibly be creating or writing something and not even know it. Stay tuned. Maybe there's an epic sci-fi webcomic lingering in the twilight zone where my brain use to sit.

The squid-head-dude made me smile.

Una older

I'm trying to figure out what to do with Una. She seems to be one of my most popular characters, so I'm looking for the right story to tell with her. I had a friend who's a teen fantsy novelist suggest that I adapt the characte for a young adult audience. Obviously, a nursing mother in her early twenties isn't really going to play to teens but, if I fastforward a few years to Annora as a young adult, I suddenly have a story to tell. And I don't have to change Una's history either. So here are some ideas about what a thirty-something Una would look like, and Annora as a young teenager.

Szana

Just a little doodle.

The hardest part about having a baby, as far as art goes, is that your routine is utterly destroyed.

So now I'm just working through this part, waiting for a good chance to fire up the oven and hammer out some new crafts.

New episode of Zyn Dweomer is on the drawing table.

Great New Blog

Nate Furman is an awesome illustrator who I'm sure would be of interest to many followers of the Wizards of Ur. He's done many card, cover and spot illustrations for gaming companies and has also done some conceptual work. You may recognize a lot of his Conan and Lord of the Rings RPG illustrations. Awesome, awesome eye candy!

Nate's a great guy and one talented Mo'Fo so head on over to his blog, check out his other sites and show him some Wiazrd of Ur love.

Atland #230 - When I Need You Most

Now you know why Sissyl didn't show up to back Nodd. She was too busy. And at this point, really doesn't need him anymore.

The coloring for the cave was inspired by palettes used by fellow Wizard of Ur, Travis Hanson.

I wrote myself into a corner here. WAAAAAAY back when this comic started, Lily's flashback of a previous Priestess of Ria showed her offering herself to the Nameless One NAKED. At the time, I was still playing with the idea of making ATLAND an R-rated comic. Full frontal nudity and all. Soon after I decided on a rough PG-13 rating (No nipples!)...never thinking about when I came to the end of the story, Lily would have to strip down for continuity.

So I had 2 choices: Go nude and find some goofy way to cover up her goodies in EVERY panel (smoke...blowing leaves...butterflies...etc...) or put SOME sort of clothing on her that I could use to cover her up when I needed to. I went with the second choice. A see-through toga. I figured I could still give you fans of Lily something to look at, but be able to leave out nipples or worse (gasp!) her naughtiest of naughties. You'll see how that works next week.

Dust Bunnie Bonfire

As I was going through my pile of bristol board kindling for the eventual bonfire, I discovered this piece of comic book creativity. I have no memory of this. I'm assuming I must have been eating some Moebius and washing it down with some Crumb. I thought that I'd share before I break out the marshmallows.

I'm hating comics today but, I still wish for all to....

Hobbit News!

This got me very excited.

"We’ve known for a while that Peter Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro’s eagerly-awaited adaptation of the Lord Of The Rings prequel, The Hobbit, would comprise two movies, due in December 2011 and 2012. But the make-up of those two movies has been up for debate… until now. We spoke exclusively to both Del Toro and Jackson for our birthday issue, and they told us the latest, which is…

“We’ve decided to have The Hobbit span the two movies, including the White Council and the comings and goings of Gandalf to Dol Guldur,” says Del Toro."

I Thought I would share.

With the new baby in town I've been extremely busy. She's a real keeper, though!

It's been weird working on the comic this week because I've tackled it in tiny 2-5 minute slots of time. Not ideal, but I got the ep done and I'm starting on the next one. Rock on.

Check the site for updates on setting and character notes. My goal is to flesh it out as I go and give you fine, fine readers a nice meaty secondary fantasy world experience.

The Village...Finished.

Finished version of a previous posted piece of eye candy. The original version has a forest and mountain range in the background. As the weather warms up, I'm thinking more and more about getting myself out to the coast to have some zen moments with the Atlantic so...I decided to go with an ocean background this time around.

Hopefully this will be the first page of a new comic but, if not, it'll be a nice, stand-alone piece of eye candy.

Atland #229 - Inky Vs. Nodd, Pt. 4

There you go.

This was one of those rare times when I wrote WAY too much dialogue for an episode. I had Inky comparing Nodd to a rabid dog (who wouldn't let go once his jaws clamped down), I had Nodd practically daring Inky to kill him...and when all was said and done, I had to cut it down. Not just for space, but pacing. I even re-arranged those top panels three times in Photoshop from what I drew on the original (that almost never happens) AND I added the inset close-up panel of Nodd dying at the bottom becuase I felt like a beat was missing from the pace.

All in all, this episode was a pain in the ass from a construction standpoint.

So I hope it was worth it.

Next week, we rejoin Lily deep inside the lair of the Nameless One...and you male fans will be pleased...

New comic from Chris Watkins

Not totally Ur-rlated, but my pal Chris Watkins, who in the past ran the fantasy webcomic hub 'Borderwalker', and has done some illustration work for Goodman Games, has a new webcomic out. It's a reality-based strip feature some new parents and their small child. Might appeal to one of our number who just has new little addition to his family...

Atland #228 - Inky Vs. Nodd, Pt. 3

See? Inky had a plan the whole time. But you knew that.

The tough part of drawing this episode was making sure that one of Inky's hands was concealed in all panels until he reveals the dagger. Particularly panel 1.

Next week...the battle between Inky and Nodd comes to a close...

Just got back from Emerald City. It was a great convention. I got to meet and chat with Stan Sakai of Usagi Yojimbo, David Mack of Kabuki, Frank Cho, Shane Glines and several other amazing artists. Everyone I showed my portfolio to loved it, and I made some important contacts with small press editors as well. It was good times.

Korgoth of Barbaria!

Korgoth

If you haven't watched this pilot for the 2006 Adult Swim show then you cannot call yourself a true fan of the genre. It's got it all: barbarians, babes, wizards, thugs, monsters, bars, and blood. And a metal theme song.

Rock on.

Atland #227 - Inky Vs. Nodd, Pt. 2

RUMBLE!!!! The fight is on!

I sopent about half an hour trying to decide whether the hilts of the daggers in panel 3 should overlap panel 2, or be trimmed at the border. Back and forth, back and forth. I even whited them out and then changed my mind and re-drew them.

I mis-typed last week. Inky Vs. Nodd will run 4 strips. I felt it was important to give it the space it needed, since it was such an important thread to tie up.

Next week, things go right off the cliff...
