More Doodles.

Here's another character idea which pored out from between my ears this week. Slowly, but surely, something is beginning to develop here. I can't wait for a story to reveal itself.

"THE CLERK:
I see this gentleman as the proprietor of a little store which is packed full of all sorts of oddities. I’m betting he’s very much attached to his little treasures and not very accommodating to the purchaser. I’m sure business is slow."

Play Nice.

Atland #199 - Lovely Undergarments

Logo Design #2

Here's another version, roughed out. Much more clear, I think. I actually like the concept behind the first version better. But this one lends itself a little more to versatile use.

I wanted to create something akin to the over-wrought band logos you see on death metal album covers. Most of those are so over-worked you can't read them. But I don't want to take it that far...I actually want the logo to be legible. I just want to capture some of the ambiance of a death metal band emblem.

I'll get into what the logo actually means a bit later.

Logo Design

Kicking around a logo concept. Needs some cleanup, but how's the design?

Weekend No Go

It was a strange weekend. I usually try to be very productive, often taking an opportunity to work late into the night and finish a couple of comic pages or some other project. But this weekend wasn’t friendly to my plans. My son – three years old – was in no mood to give Daddy any room whatsoever. His Mommy wasn’t feeling so hot either. Add to that the fact that I’m still engaged in a savage inner battle over purpose and direction and you have a witch’s brew of bad omens.

To make a long story short I didn’t accomplish very much. A new page of Arzra sits on my desk, fully penciled and ready for inks and color. I didn’t get to touch it. Hell, I was in no mood to touch it even if the opportunity had reared its head.

I did manage to replace my stolen MP3 player. I had a Siren 4gb that was taken by miserable thieves from the seat of my truck (may they be stricken with stinging crotch bugs). I replaced it with a Siren 2gb ($29, works for me). I also spent the last of my petty PayPal cash on a Wacom Bamboo. I have never used a tablet before but the hankering has been gnawing at me for months. I figured I’d play it safe and start with a smaller, less expensive model. Based on reviews and testimonials the Bamboo seems to be the one to go with for beginners. So I’m looking forward to getting that in the mail this week (yes, I have an evil plan for a fully digital webcomic…I always have evil plans, you just don’t always hears about them).

ELA in Love at First Byte

Here's a little wizardly treat to liven up your Monday afternoon.

Co-director Fernando Sarmiento descibes 'ELA in Love at First Byte' as, “A weird mix between She Ra, Tron and Flash Gordon.” It was produced by the Argentinian motion graphic studio PepperMelon.

It just gets better and better the longer you watch it, and I suggest putting it on full-screen mode!:

Grave Shift

Been pretty crap about posting lately, but I've been on vacation and very busy with work - I seem to have taken on a ton of freelance assignments. Also I have been wasting far too much time playing this:

A free web-game which is loads of fun, with artwork by local artist Jeff Nevins:

New Pewfell will begin soon!!

ELF `n TROLL # 211

Arzra page nine

Page nine of Arzra of Aroora is now up. Remember kiddies, this is a "mature readers" comic. Have fun.

The Lizard Folk

I've been spending a lot of my down time fleshing-out my fantasy world of `Tween. This also tells me that a return to this comic may be inevitable. (We'll see.) I tend not to do a lot of world-building when it comes to my comics; I just sort of let it build itself but, inevitably, I end up regretting not putting the time in. So far, I'm having fun with this. You can find the few sketches I've been doing up in my Deviant Art gallery. Here's one of the Lizard Folk. In case it comes up in your next Trivial Pursuit game...the Narrator, in the original `Tween comic, was a member of this species.

The Lizard Folk:
"Back in the day when magic had yet to dominate the world of `Tween; there existed a race of intelligent lizards. They dominated the world until an unknown, cataclysmic event occurred rendering the species almost extinct. The few who survived had lost their intelligence and have since become domesticated; used as a method of transportation by some."

Arzra

Finally getting my art gears lubed up again. New Arzra page up (adult material, so careful with your wee eyeballs).

Now back to your regularly scheduled life.

Elfs, Dammit

Inked drawing, colored very quickly in Photoshop. I think I still prefer using traditional media to color. If I do digital coloring I prefer to do it very spontaneously, using the tools as if they were wet media such as watercolor. This is more or less a flat coloring with a few layer effects. Nothing special, but kind of fun.

Red Sonja 2009

Rose McGowan as Red Sonja, in a flick directed by Robert Rodriguez. I think I'm sold.

Spadefoot!

Matt Dembicki's space fantasy Spadefoot is now available to read for free at Wowoio! This is a terrific, fun romp of a comic that you don't want to miss. And I'm not just saying that because Matt is a hell of a talent, nor that Andrew Cohen rocks, and not even just because I drew the first hand full of pages...no...I'm saying it because it's true.

ELF `n TROLL # 208

Today, a special guest appearance and ploy to tie my little universe together. How clever!
